Vineyard & Wine Lore

About Hiddencroft Vineyards

Looking for a winery away from the well-worn path—one that still feels like a real place, not a production? Hiddencroft Vineyards might be your answer.

We’re tucked among rolling farmland in Loudoun County wine country, where the pace is slower and the views are the kind you can breathe into. From the beginning, our goal has been simple: make honest Virginia wine, welcome people warmly, and let the property do what it has always done—tell its story.

Rustic Charm & Regal Wine

Hiddencroft is an authentic Virginia Farm Winery. Ninety-seven percent of our red, white, and rosé wines are produced from our estate-grown grapes. The remaining 3% come from other Loudoun County vineyards. All wine is produced, cellared, and bottled right here on our property.

Our tagline says it best: “Rustic Charm & Regal Wine.” That means approachable wines you’ll actually want to drink, paired with gracious hospitality in a relaxed rural setting.

The Wine

Our style leans drinkable, generous, and balanced.

  • Reds spend plenty of time in barrel—typically 22 to 42 months—for depth and smoothness.
  • Whites are complex and aromatic, often showing notes of fruit, flowers, and spice.
  • Rosés are refreshing and “punch-like,” available in both dry and off-dry versions.
  • Port-style wines are also available—and at 18% alcohol, they’re wonderfully warming.

However you prefer to enjoy Hiddencroft, you have options:

  • Visit and sample wines at our tasting house
  • Order bottles by phone for curbside pick-up
  • Shop our online store for purchase and shipping to 37 states
  • Send friends and family e-Gift Cards (usable for curbside or in the tasting room)

A Place With a Long Memory

In 2011, we expanded operations to the adjacent historic property—what we now call home base for welcoming guests. Our tasting room is a circa-1860s farmhouse, believed to have been built by members of the Compher family, among the early settlers of “The German Settlement,” now known as Lovettsville.

The farmhouse offers multiple ways to settle in:

  • Two tasting counters with views of the backyard and Dutchman’s Creek
  • Upstairs seating across three rooms (about 25 seats total)
  • A large deck that seats about 30 beneath a shade sail, with an open view of the vineyard
  • A patio and massive fire pit that add extra space in spring and summer—and a cozy glow when the air turns crisp

Flower gardens surround the house, drawing butterflies all season long. Our “Butterfly Haven” is a Registered Monarch Waystation, and if you visit at the right moment, you’ll understand why we couldn’t resist naming it.

The Outbuildings and the Old Footpath

History isn’t just a backdrop here—it’s under your feet.

Three log outbuildings on the property date to roughly 1845–1855. One served as a meat-curing house, and another includes an oversized stone chimney and fireplace, used as an outdoor kitchen. We excavated the original stone path behind the tasting house; it loops the buildings, crosses a footbridge over Dutchman’s Creek, and becomes a rustic log-lined trail that connects to the still-functioning spring house.

It’s the kind of place that quietly reminds you: people have been working, cooking, gathering, and making do here for a very long time.

The Barn

Our Pennsylvania-style bank barn, built in 1929, is resplendent in its simplicity—massive beams, sturdy floors, and wide doors on the north and south sides that invite sunlight and fresh air. Light slips between the batten strips with an almost ethereal effect, while rustic chandeliers add a warm glow.

Expansive tasting counters—crafted simply from used burgundy barrels and fence boards—allow us to host larger group tastings by advance reservation, and the barn remains one of our favorite spaces for memorable gatherings.

A Small Note About Our Other “Vines”

Hiddencroft is where we grow grapes and make wine—but we’re also storytellers at heart. If you enjoy the history of this place, you might like our companion literary site, Enchanted Green Acres, where we publish essays and stories inspired by farm life, local history, and the kinds of moments that don’t fit neatly on a tasting menu. Think of it as another way to take a little piece of the property home—by word, not bottle.

Calendar & Events

Hiddencroft Vineyards is open year-round. We offer seasonal events, special tastings, and occasional surprises. To see what’s coming up, please check our Event Calendar—it changes often, because around here, the best plans are the ones that still leave room for weather, harvest, and a good idea that shows up out of nowhere.

We look forward to welcoming you—off the beaten path, on purpose.
